Campus Resources For All Students
Math is not my forte, and ASU understands that, which is why it offers the Math Lab. Having trouble conquering an essay? The Writing Center is only a few doors down. Located on the third floor of the library, these and other tutoring services will make you a better student.
I started using the Math Lab after I had to drop college algebra my freshman year. My sophomore year, I was majorly intimidated from the moment I walked into my finite mathematics class. Side note: anyone who takes up the offer of being a math major should receive the Fields Medal just for the task.
On the first day, my instructor, Mrs. Fuchs, made us exchange numbers with the students sitting around us. While this is a common practice on campus, I never put the context of it into math class. Mrs. Fuchs encouraged us to get help outside of class in the Math Lab. Since I don’t live on campus, I usually do homework at home, but I knew to survive and slay the math dragon I had to take a journey to the Math Lab.
When you go to the Math Lab, you swipe your ASU OneCard to sign in and choose the table you feel most comfortable at. There are also computers for online work. There are math tutors who will help you with problems you are having.
My favorite thing about the Math Lab was that it is a place where I could do math homework surrounded by math. When I got stuck on a problem, a tutor would explain it to me until I understood. I passed finite mathematics with a B, thanks to the Math Lab.
I stumbled across the Writing Center during freshman English. My professor made an assignment where we had to use the Writing Center. You walk in and a tutor asks you how they can help. They sign you in, ask you who your professor is so they can contact them saying you were there for help. The awesome thing about that is the professor knows you reached out for assistance on a writing assignment.
The Writing Center helps with the structure of your essay, but they cannot edit your writing. They can, however, steer you in the right direction. It’s best to prepare yourself with questions before you walk in. That way you can work together to get the best content.
ASU’s simple yet effect tutoring centers will make a difference in your grades. Studying is not something we master overnight. It takes time to understand how we process information. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We are all learning here at ASU.
