The Power of Music in College
School can bring you down. I’m not saying that it’s bad going to school, I’m saying that the school grind is hard and it can take a toll on you. For me, music is something I can always depend on to help me get through the days.
Music can capture every mood and even make us feel emotions that we didn’t feel before. The heartbreakingly beautiful music of Adele can make you want to cry. Drake, depending on the song, can make you want to go out and have or good time or reflect on a past relationship.
It seems to me like there is a song for everything and many different uses for music. But not all music is created equal.
Some music is a mystery to me. It seems like every genre has some artist who can make you hate music or at least question how that performer even got a chance to put their music out there and make money. On the other hand, if that person or group can be so bad and still succeed, why can’t you?
Well, it’s more complex than that. For one thing, even though you think some artists are horrible (and they probably are), there always seems to be someone out there who likes their music. It’s a fact of life. Just because you don’t like them, it doesn’t mean that everyone else in the world has to hate them, too. For instance, I don’t like a rap artist named Fetty Wap (notable for his song “Trap Queen”) but a lot of people must like his music because he is making money off his tours and his recently released album.
With bad music – or at least music you think is bad – all you can do is try not to listen to it. That could be hard because the song or artist you don’t like might be on the radio a lot. Just push through it. That three or four minutes of your life won’t kill you.
I’m not talking about G.O.O.D Music, Kanye West’s music label. (It was funny in my head.) I’m talking about good music, music that makes you cry, makes you want to go out and have fun, music that makes you want to go out and conquer the world or dance all day in front of the mirror. Everyone knows what it feels like to hear good music. Some people get goosebumps, some people put the song on an infinite loop. Listening to good music can get you through bad times and also make the good times even better.
Imagine getting the news that you aced your final exam and it pushed your grade up to an A. You get in the car and your favorite song comes on (for me right now that song would be “Don’t Change” by Rockie Fresh). How excited would you be? Would you turn up the radio until your speakers were on the verge of blowing out? Would you sing your heart out? Would you just sit in your car and have your own personal concert? Everyone loves feeling good, and music is something that helps a lot of people to experience that feeling.
On campus, music is a part of my daily life. Sometimes I have to walk a lot and during those times, it’s very relaxing to listen to music. Sometimes, I will get to class and actually wait outside the classroom until a song is over. (I’m always on time, though!)
