The Benefits of Staying for the Summer
For all you freshmen out there more than eager to go home for the summer to see all your old high school friends, rethink it.
Summer in high school is not summer in college. This is a point in time when you start to change and you want to give yourself a lot of opportunities. Summer in San Angelo, in my opinion, is not bad at all.
Yes, of course, we all know A$AP said it best — “she ain’t stranger to the city life” — when it comes to going home, but you would be missing out on so much here.
Step Up Your Studies
First off, summer college classes are a fantastic way to get ahead of the game. Let’s say you stay and take a class or two over summer and the classes you take are dealing with your major. Whether the professor is one you’ve had before or one who is brand-new to you, you’ll have the opportunity to impress this instructor more in summer than you probably would in fall.
Why is that? Well summer courses cram a lot of work into a quarter of the time. Everything is condensed into short — and sometimes intense — learning and you see or interact with your professor several days a week.
Summer classes are where I learned a lot of valuable information that I continue to use today. My first summer at Angelo State University, I took English 1302 and that was the only class I took so, besides working, my time was devoted to this one class.
Long story short, I aced that course and took away more valuable info from that class than I had my whole first year of college.
Taking a summer class helps you sit down and focus on that one class instead of the usual five classes you take. In turn, this should reflect well in your grade. It would really be hard not to do well in a course over the summer.
Beat Out the Job Competition
Another big plus is finding work in San Angelo over the summer. I have heard countless students here at ASU complain during the school year about not being able to find a job or not getting paid enough at their current job. Well, both of those may be true, but I guarantee if you put in a little effort, you can find a sweet summer job that pays nicely somewhere in town.
I am sure you want to go back home to work and enjoy all that fun with old friends, but I know for a fact San Angelo has some great paying jobs here that would probably beat out most of the choices you have waiting for you at home.
Enjoy Your Freedom
Going home will never be the same once you have attended college. I bet you have already noticed that, if you visited your family throughout the school year.
It’s hard to describe why it’s so different now. Maybe it’s that you miss being in San Angelo because you finally got a little taste of that oh-so-sweet freedom you had been craving for the past 18-plus years of your life.
